You can use the exact same layout with different Designer Series Papers, colors, and sentiments and end up with cards that look completely different. That’s exactly what I’m showing you today with two cards created from the same sketch but designed for two totally different occasions.

Why Card Sketches Are Perfect for Beginners
If you’ve ever sat down to make a card and didn’t know where to start, card sketches are the answer. They take the guesswork out of card design and give you a roadmap for creating beautiful cards in minutes.
That’s why I love sharing simple card sketch templates and quick and easy card sketch ideas each week. You can follow the sketch exactly or use it as inspiration to create your own unique design.
This week’s sketch uses three patterned paper panels layered onto a cardstock mat, making it perfect for showcasing your favorite Designer Series Paper collections.
Card #1 – Elegant Floral Card with Violet Dreams Designer Series Paper
For my first card, I used the beautiful Violet Dreams Designer Series Paper paired with the Framed Violets Stamp Set.
Using the sketch as my guide, I selected three different prints from the paper pack and adhered them to a piece of Basic White cardstock. That panel was then mounted onto a Gorgeous Grape card base.
The papers in this collection are so stunning that they really do most of the work for you. To finish the card, I stamped my sentiment in Gorgeous Grape ink onto a strip of Basic White cardstock. I layered a strip of Highland Heather cardstock behind it and popped the sentiment up with Stampin’ Dimensionals for a little extra depth.
To add a touch of sparkle and texture, I finished the front with several Adhesive-Backed Blooms from the suite collection.
I didn’t stop with the card front! I added Designer Series Paper to the envelope flap to create a beautiful coordinating envelope. On the inside of the card, I added another strip of Designer Series Paper and hand-cut a gorgeous flower bouquet from one of the patterned sheets.
The finished card and envelope set came together quickly and looks absolutely beautiful. It’s a perfect example of how simple card sketches for beginners can create elegant results with very little effort.
Card #2 – Fun Halloween Card with Frightfully Fun Designer Series Paper
For my second card, I used the exact same layout but created a completely different look using the Frightfully Fun Designer Series Paper.
Just like the first card, I selected three different patterned papers and adhered them to a Very Vanilla cardstock layer. This panel was then mounted onto a Basic Black card base.
To add some playful Halloween charm, I hand-cut the adorable kitten from one of the patterned papers and popped him up in the upper left corner of the card.
For the sentiment, I stamped onto a Very Vanilla rectangle using black ink, layered it onto a Basic Black rectangle, and popped it up with Dimensionals.
To finish the front, I added a few of the fun Bats & Ghost embellishments.
The coordinating envelope received a strip of the kitten Designer Series Paper on the envelope flap, and inside the card I added another strip of patterned paper along with a second hand-cut kitten image.
The result is a fun and festive Halloween card that looks nothing like the floral version, even though both cards started with the same sketch.
Same Sketch, Endless Possibilities
That’s the beauty of using card sketches. One simple layout can be transformed into countless card designs simply by changing the paper, colors, stamps, and embellishments.
