Card Sketch Inspiration for Handmade Cards with Designer Series Paper

card sketch inspiration for handmade cards the stamp camp

Today is Card Sketch #41, and if you are looking for card sketch inspiration for handmade cards, then you might just want to take a look at today’s sketch.

This is a super easy sketch to work with and it gives you amazing results with any Designer Series Paper you have on hand. Whether you love bold florals, soft pastels, or nature-inspired prints, this layout works beautifully every time.

For today’s samples, I used:

  • Made with Love Designer Series Paper

  • Easter Joy Specialty Designer Series Paper

  • Nature’s Walk Designer Series Paper & Sticker Sheet

Each of these cards uses just a few Designer Series Paper strips — and the results are absolutely beautiful.

As usual, we’ll take a close look at each card. The measurements are exactly the same for all three cards — just change up the papers, stamps, and embellishments to create a completely different look.

Be sure to download and print this week’s sketch so you’ll have a great resource at your fingertips whenever you’re looking for inspiration or quick card ideas.

Card #1

Card #1 – Made with Love Designer Series Paper

Card #1 uses the Made with Love Designer Series Paper and is just in time for a sweet Valentine’s Day card.

The card base is Flirty Flamingo and measures 5 ½” x 8 ½”, scored at 4 ¼”.

The Basic White layer measures 4” x 5 ¼”.

Designer Series Paper Strip Placement

The outside edge of the Basic White layer is lined with strips of the Made with Love Designer Series Paper. Here’s how to attach them:

  • Start in the upper left-hand corner

  • Attach a strip across the top: 1” x 4”

  • Down the right-hand side: 1” x 2 ¾”

  • Across the bottom edge: 1” x 4”

  • Back up the left-hand side: 1” x 2 ¾”

This creates a beautiful framed border effect using just simple paper strips.

Center Panel

In the middle, add a piece of cardstock or Designer Series Paper that measures:

  • 1 ½” x 2 ¾”

This is the perfect spot for:

  • A stamped image

  • A die-cut heart

  • Or a layered sentiment

You can pop this center piece up with dimensionals for added interest, or keep it flat for easy mailing.

One little design tip I used on this card was to flip the Designer Series Paper over for the two 1” x 2 ¾” side pieces.

By using the opposite side of the paper on those strips, it creates:

  • Added contrast

  • More visual interest

  • A balanced frame effect

Since Stampin’ Up! Designer Series Paper is double-sided, this is an easy way to showcase both patterns without adding extra layers or bulk.

That’s the beauty of card sketch inspiration for handmade cards — once you have the layout, the possibilities are endless.

Card #2 – Easter Joy Specialty Designer Series Paper

Card #2 uses the Easter Joy Specialty Designer Series Paper, which is part of my Stamp Camp at Home Card Club Kit for February.

This sweet little Easter card is perfect for the grands. That super cute little bunny holding a carrot is sure to be a win-win! The soft spring colors paired with this simple sketch really let the focal image shine.

Even though the layout and measurements are exactly the same as Card #1, the overall feel is completely different just by changing the Designer Series Paper.

A Simple Sentiment Tip

The sentiment I chose for this card was a long strip-style stamp. Instead of trying to make it fit in one line, I simply:

  • Stamped the sentiment onto Balmy Blue cardstock

  • Cut the stamped greeting into two separate pieces

  • Arranged them to fit nicely on the card front

Just because a stamp is long doesn’t mean you can’t stamp it and cut it into sections to better fit your design. Don’t be afraid to customize your sentiment placement — it gives you so much more flexibility with your card sketches.

Finishing Touch

The carrot the bunny is holding was hand-cut directly from the Designer Series Paper pack.

This is another great way to stretch your supplies. If your paper has small images or elements, you can easily fussy cut them and use them as embellishments without needing extra stamps or dies.

Same sketch.
Same measurements.
A completely different look — and absolutely adorable for Easter.

Card #3 – Nature’s Walk Designer Series Paper & Sticker Sheet

Card #3 was created using the Nature’s Walk Designer Series Paper & Sticker Sheet — and there were no stamps involved on this card.

The measurements are exactly the same as the first two cards, with one exception:

  • This card is vertical (portrait) instead of horizontal.

  • I did not flip the 1” x 2 ¾” side pieces to the opposite side of the Designer Series Paper.

I absolutely could have flipped them like I did on Card #1, but I chose not to so you could see how the card looks when all the Designer Series Paper patterns stay the same.

Why I Designed It This Way

By keeping all the paper strips facing the same direction, it creates the illusion that:

  • You used one full 3 ¾” x 5” piece of Designer Series Paper

  • Then added a center cardstock layer on top

At first glance, it almost doesn’t look like strips at all.

And yes — you could absolutely create the card using one full piece of Designer Series Paper and add the center layer on top.

But I wanted to show you how to achieve the same look using paper strips — because let’s be honest… we all have leftover strips of Designer Series Paper sitting in our craft room.

This sketch is perfect for:

  • Using up scraps

  • Creating a cohesive look

  • Making quick and easy cards without waste

The stickers from the Nature’s Walk pack made finishing this card simple. Just peel, place, and you’re done — no stamping required.

Same sketch.
Same measurements.
Three completely different looks.
