Handmade card sketch designs are the perfect way to use up those little paper scraps we all keep for a rainy day. Today’s card sketch is inspired by a beautiful quilt pattern created with strips of designer series paper.
At first glance this card may look complicated, but it is actually very simple to create. The secret is in the tiny 4-paper square corners and the final embossing step. Once the entire piece is embossed, all the paper strips are sealed together beautifully and the finished design truly looks like woven fabric. It adds amazing texture and dimension to your handmade cards while using up those smaller scraps you may have tucked away in your craft room.
This card sketch is also incredibly versatile. You can create this pattern with any paper strips you already have on hand. Change the colors and prints to match the season, holiday, or occasion you need. Christmas papers would also look stunning with this quilt-inspired layout.
One of my favorite things about handmade card sketch designs like this one is how easy they make the creative process. Instead of wondering where to place your papers and embellishments, the sketch does the work for you. Simply follow the layout, mix and match your favorite designer series paper strips, and finish with a sentiment that fits your occasion.
The embossed texture not only gives the card a professional finished look, but it also helps flatten and secure the layered paper pieces. This makes the design look polished without adding a lot of bulk to your card front.
If you have been saving paper scraps and wondering how to use them, this is a wonderful project to try. It is quick, easy, and a great way to turn leftover pieces into something beautiful.
For today’s card I used the Nature Walk Designer Series Paper not only on the embossed quilt piece, but also as the mat layer on the card front. The card base is Pretty Peacock, a color pulled directly from the designer paper which helps tie the entire card together beautifully.
The embossing folder I used for this technique is the Damask Designs Embossing Folder which is currently on the Last Chance List and only available while supplies last. It is marked down to just $8.55, making this a great time to add it to your collection before it is gone. Of course, you can easily recreate this handmade card sketch design using any embossing folder you already have in your craft room.
The “Thank You” sentiment on the card front came from another stamp set in my collection, proving once again that card sketches are perfect for mixing and matching supplies you already own. To finish the card, I embellished it with the Faux Bronze Pentagons from the Nature Walk Suite which added just the right amount of texture and shine.
