Simple Card Sketches for Beginners Using Designer Series Paper

simple card sketches for beginners

Welcome to Week #45 in my Card Sketch series! Today’s sketch focuses on simple card sketches for beginners using Designer Series Paper, and it’s a great one for using up those small leftover pieces we all tend to collect on our craft desks.

This month in my Stamp Camp at Home Card Club Kit, I’m featuring the Lovely & Beautiful Specialty Designer Series Paper. I happened to have it spread out across my desk while working on this week’s sketch and noticed I had lots of gorgeous little pieces left over. Instead of putting them back in the pile, I decided to incorporate them into today’s design.

The result? A simple and versatile sketch that works perfectly with small strips or squares of Designer Series Paper.

If you’re like me, you probably have a stash of beautiful paper scraps that are just too pretty to throw away. This sketch is ideal for turning those scraps into something beautiful while keeping the design clean and beginner-friendly.

Before we take a closer look at each of the cards using today’s sketch, I want to make sure you know that you can download and print the sketch to keep in your craft room. Having a collection of sketches nearby is incredibly helpful for those moments when creativity feels a little stuck. When that happens, simply pull out your notebook, choose a sketch, grab some paper, and start creating.

You may have noticed I recently started a new series within my card sketches. For the next few weeks, I’ll be featuring layouts specifically designed to help you use up those paper scraps.

Now, let’s take a closer look at each of my samples for today.

For my first sample, I started with a Calypso Coral card base measuring 4 1/4″ x 11″, scored at 5 1/2″ to create a standard A2 card.

The pieces of Lovely & Beautiful Designer Series Paper are arranged beginning in the upper left-hand corner, using 1 1/4″ x 3 3/4″ strips placed across the top. Along the bottom edge, I added a strip measuring 1 3/8″ x 4″.

When assembling this layout, I like to start with the bottom strip first and then add the upper strips, working from the outside inward while lining everything up. This helps keep the spacing nice and even.

With this particular sketch, the Designer Series Paper really becomes the star of the card, so I kept the rest of the design simple. For the greeting, I stamped a sentiment onto a die cut from the Beautifully Celebrated Dies. I used two coordinating dies, layering the sentiment piece onto a Gold Foil matted die cut to highlight the gold accents found in the Designer Series Paper.

The sentiment itself comes from the Prayers and Promises Stamp Set.

To finish off the card, I added a few Pearlized Faceted Circles, which are part of the Lovely & Beautiful Suite. These embellishments add just the right amount of shine while keeping the focus on the beautiful paper.

For my second sample, I kept the measurements exactly the same as the first card since this sketch is so easy to recreate with different papers.

The card base this time is Fresh Freesia, which gives the design a softer look while still coordinating beautifully with the Lovely & Beautiful Designer Series Paper.

The paper strips follow the same measurements and layout as Card #1. The only change I made was using a different print from the paper pack for the bottom strip, which adds a little variety while still keeping the overall design consistent.

For the greeting, I used one of the Stylish Shapes banner dies to create a simple sentiment piece. The sentiment itself comes from the Simply Beautiful Stamp Set.

Just like the first card, the goal with this sketch is to let the Designer Series Paper shine, making it easy to create beautiful cards quickly while using up those smaller paper pieces.
